Hi Innovator!

The "SBIR is Back" Issue

Update on the agencies with current or upcoming solicitations

With the wait over, let's dig right into the currently active SBIR/STTR opportunities for small businesses right now.

Department of Defense/War

The Department of Defense SBIR/STTR Innovation Portal, or DSIP, is the website to bookmark to access all topics, BAA and component instructions, etc.

Proposals for the 25.4/D topics are due May 13, 2026.  The 91 topics in the FY2026 SBIR/STTR Solicitations Release 1 will move from pre-release to open status on Wednesday May 6. Full proposals are due June 3, 2026. There are 66 SBIR topics, 21 STTR topics, and 4 CSO topics.  New pre-release topics are posted on the first Wednesday of each month.

The Navy will hold a webinar on Wednesday May 6 to discuss their 2026 Navy SBIR CSO Release 1 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM MT. Register here.

NASA

NASA SBIR/STTR program has issued its FY2026 BAA and the first appendices: 2026 Appendix A SBIR, 2026 Appendix B SBIR, 2026 Appendix B STTR.  Links from their program site will direct you to SAM.gov listings to retrieve full documents.

Department of Transportation

The Department of Transportation SBIR program's FY2026 Phase I Pre-Solicitation Notice has been posted. There are 10 research topics described. This pre-release period is the time to review the topic areas and engage with topic authors confidentially. The solicitation submission window will open approximately June 3 with full proposals due July 7.

Two upcoming opportunities to learn more

  1. For Montana or Wyoming teams interested in exploring SBIR and what is involved in preparing these proposals, join the upcoming two-day SBIR/STTR proposal lab with our Wyoming FAST partners starting May 28.

  2. If you are a Montana small business and pursuing DoD or NASA contracts, apply to our Big Sky Accelerator where we will actively navigate you through every step to submit competitive SBIR/STTR proposals to contracting agencies.

Two-Day SBIR/STTR Proposal Lab May 28 & June 11

For Montana and Wyoming Small Businesses

We are thrilled to join our FAST partners in Wyoming to provide this focused, two-part SBIR/STTR Proposal Lab designed to help you develop a competitive Phase I submission. The content will be relevant to all 11 SBIR and 6 STTR agencies, with particular emphasis on DoD, NIH, NSF, DOE, and NASA.

Day 1: On May 28, we’ll cover program fundamentals and outline a structured process for preparing your technical proposal.

Day 2: On June 11, we’ll complete that process and explore key concepts for building a sound cost proposal—ensuring your project budget is accurate and sustainable.

If you are located in Montana or Wyoming, reach out to Ann Peterson or Kelly Haigler Cornish (respectively) to receive pre-submission reviews.

Please register for both days of the two-part training; a unique link will be provided for each day of the event.
